Hack: System Metalizing Instructions

"A Better Brushed -- How Make Panther (10.3.2) MOSTLY brushed.

Basically, I got sick and tired of the inconsistent look of Mac OS X. I also do not like the new non-brushed-but-not-exactly-aqua-either window title bars. So I decided to install Brushed into my system directly. That way, Brushed becomes my default look when not using ShapeShifter.

This also has several nice side effects: A Brushed Window Title, Brushed Pulldown Menus, and even Brushed Window backgrounds (in most cases anyway). So the look is more consistent... and cooler than the "new" Aqua even aspires to.

A Better Brushed Image

Of course, this creates a few pitfalls. But let me say that though it looks like a lot of work from my post here, in reality this takes about an hour of diligent editing.

So here goes..."

"As I'm sure most of you do, I try hard to find icon sets that go well with the various themes I use.

Here's my list so far:

Theme: Power Metal
Icons: TiSystem

Theme: Milk
Icons: Block OS Pod or Orbital

Theme: Smoothstripes
Icons: Snow E.2

Theme: Pro Plastic
Icons: Outline (by Everaldo) plus some other plasticky icons

What are your matches?

-Jason"

Discussion: Creating themes

"Hi,

I looked through search and couldn't find anything.. How does one create a theme for shape shifter? I would google, but seeing as everyone here has such great themes, I figured that you guys would know what tools you used to create them, and would have tips and what not.

"You need to get ThemePark from Geekspiff.com (a.k.a. Jason Harris, the creator of ShapeShifter). ThemePark, as you may have guessed, is a theme editor for ShapeShifter's guiKit format (you can also create a standard theme and export it as a DLTA or an Xscheme, but it won't contain any of the guiKit's additional features). It's very comprehensive, especially because each resource editing layout includes captions done by Max Rudberg himself (!) for almost all of the resources that make up a theme. You also need to choose a new guiKit theme (set to Command+N) in order to, as mentioned, take advantage of all the guiKit's additional features."

Discussion: Unsanity Theme Contest

Comment by Stevos (Topic Starter, MacNN Forum Member):
"I was worried that this would be the result. I know all of those involved put a lot of time into their themes, and they are great for first time themes. There are a few of them that are even good enough to be used and compared to SmoothStripes, Alumnium Alloy, etc.

Unfortunately, too many 'big time' themes didn't participate, I think because they felt it wouldn't be fair given their SS involvement.

Anyway, I strongly suggest that next time, there are two options for themers to submit to, the Pro Bowl and the Kiddie League. This way, first time themers can have a good competition, and hopefully create something great, but at the same time, pro themers will come out in a real competition against each other. More fun for everyone.

The only problem I see is that many people were like halfway into their themes, so they didn't want to start a new one for this contest. Not sure how to fix it."
