User Voting Begins!
Yes, the news you have all been waiting for. User voting guidelines are now up!
"Your user votes will affect each mockup's score tremendously, as that portion will count as 50% of an entry's final score. We recommend that you go through each page clicking the expanded preview, carefully judging each entry's aesthetics and usability, (is it pretty? would you use it?) and then command click a star to rate the entry in a new tab. A score of 5 should represent that you believe an entry belongs in the top 6 winners. A score of 1 should represent that you believe the entry is the worst an entry could be. Please do not abuse this system to attempt to sway the score. Thanks for reading this, enjoy, and discussions in our comments system is always welcome!"
Enjoy. Oh, and one more thing. Now that you've read the voting guidelines, I recommend you click the ballot box to start the user voting process. It's going to take a while, since there's 45 entries to wade (or gleefully skip) through, so try to have fun!

where the HELL ARE THE PICTURES?
I must be a retard cause I can't figure out how to see the previews. The only links I can find are email, scoring, and 'continue reading'.

Good luck to everyone! I'm the guy behind Futura Tech... hope you like!

Wow! I'm deeply impressed by the quality of some of these mockups... I can't wait to see the finished products -- there are at least six themes in there I think I'd definitely get some use out of if they were developed. :)

C'mon, you've got to be kidding me, right? I was all excited to see what cool concepts would be entered, and now I'm sorely disappointed. It's the same proliferation of lackluster themes we saw in the Kaleidoscope days; overly busy, unusable, crud. Aren't there ANY designers out there, or are all Mac users these days kids and grannies?
Posted by Granny Williams at March 31, 2004 11:30 AM
hey there sonny ! What the belisphemousities is wrong with us grannies?!?!
we can use the mac as well as photoshop better than the likes of you!
your mother will slap your butt when she hears about this!
disgusted,
Granny

Well, my theme is on the page...*sigh* I thought I was going to get disqualified for the scrollbar proportions.
Mine's Silver 1.0.

Some nice, others OK. I'd sure as hell liek to see something other than all grey themes win out - don't get me wrong, I usually end up with a grey as default. but I want something new for those days...
I just don't seem to be liking what others have voted for so far...we'll see as time goes on.
Good luck to all.

How do we vote?
Posted by joe at March 31, 2004 02:27 PM
I don't really like many of the entries. :(
Posted by gautch at March 31, 2004 02:30 PM
First: Good Luck
Second: Be sure to look at the Full Preview's they add a lot to the designs.
Third: Remember some of these designers are not pro's so they are just Mockups, try to see them as how Max and the gang will make them in all there glory!
Again: Good Luck!

That is not how some are voting... ;)

Sorry, Granny Williams, no offense. I point to my passion for the outburst. But honestly, by a show of hands, would anyone REALLY use a theme that has so much STUFF going on in the title and menu bars (like skulls and such)? Woouldn't it be tough to get things done? Now, if you're not a professional, slaving away on your Mac all day making a living (and that's where the grannies and kids comment came from) I could see how something so... distracting--- could be, to use the latest written slang, "kewl". Otherwise, you've gotta admit, they're pretty tough to look at. Sorry, guys. Max, I love ya, man. Now you've got it goin' on.

I'm a little disturbed that I submitted mine at 9:07PM CST (within the deadline) on Monday and Phil said that he never received it.
I think that *next time* (if there is a next time) that there should be a few days between the deadline and the posting so that contestants can receive feedback as to whether or not their theme was received, diqualified, etc...

So much stuff? Look, if you're a professional then aren't there already like a billion themes for you? Use Milk or Good Grey or whatever if you want that kind of theme! Am I the only one who wishes there was more stuff not slight modifications from other themes already out there. Grey grey grey. I love the ones that are impossible because of OS X restrictions because at least then people were trying to think of new ideas. Maybe I'm wrong but I thought the whole point to this contest was to foster new ideas, not slightly different ideas. So a big "yay" to boneyard for having skulls in it. Would I ever use it? Nope, cause skulls ain't my thing, but am I impressed that it wasn't just another metal and/or plastic and/or LED based theme? Yes, yes I am.

I agree with the comments about all the grey themes. There are already many good all grey themes available. I am really hoping we step away from voting for "what looks like a theme I already like anyway" and into voting for themes that maybe offer something new or different.
I am also a little disappointed in some of the comments. Constructive criticism is good, being a complete jerk is not.
If this is ever done again, I would like to see the panel pick out the winners. Otherwise we run into the problem of "whoever has the most friends wins". This means a lot of truly good ideas get discarded in the "popularity contest".
Posted by Paul Johnson at March 31, 2004 05:50 PM
Remember that popularity is only worth half the weighting. Which means in effect that the panel of judges will have nearly complete control over the final decisions. The practical application of this is that even if one entry got 100% of the popular vote, which is statistically highly unlikely, that popular vote would still be only half of the entry's score. So, in theory, since a unanimous judging panel is MUCH more likely, the panel's scoring outweighs the popularity vote. In reality, the popularity vote will of course have an effect on judge's opinions, and I doubt that the judging panel would ever end up unanimously selecting an entry that didn't score fairly in the popular vote, so even if the voting had nothing to do with aesthetic considerations, you'd never see the least popular entry come in first or the most popular entry come in last place.
The point is, the popular vote IS a popularity contest. There's no way around that, and that's what it's supposed to be. BUT, the final decision is made by the judging panel, who I assume has a whole list of criteria that they judge by. And in my opinion, the system should work quite well and result in a fair outcome, assuming that the intended result is to get the six best entries made into actual themes.
Remember also that anyone can make a theme out of their design if they really want to. Just because they get 7th place doesn't mean they can't learn to make a theme, or convince someone else to help them make it. The point of this contest was, I assume, to raise awareness of theming in general and attract new theming talent. And I can't imagine that that those two goals won't be accomplished regardless of the outcome of the contest.
So, uh... everyone's a winner. Yeah, that's it. :)
Posted by Gabriela Durini at March 31, 2004 06:44 PM
Hehe, agreed. Anyway, I just really hate "popularity" votes because it comes down to how many friends you can get to vote for you, etc. Sometimes, it's not the worthy ones that win. In any case, this IS a great way to get people into theming. I hope that the success of this first round turns into more contests and opportunity for other artists to showcase their talents. ^.^

i think the popularity vote will not be affected much if you have more friends than others unless you have about a hundred more fans/friends than unknown people (sascha might fall into that category). BUT considering that macthemes.net is being hammered by page views at the moment i think that the popularity vote should be considerably fair. at least thats what i hope. :-/ ;-)
