Wow. I mean... sweet jesus.

There's not much to say about this from an aesthetic standpoint. It's very usable, it's very clean, and it has those awesome window titlebars and menubar. I love the window widgets, and the menu, and the progress bar... I think I'm going to have to cross my legs ;).

Ok, got a hold of myself now. This theme has some killer graphics for the wow factor, but falls apart a bit under more scrutiny. Most of the elements are not consistent with the rock golom injected window alloy™, especially the Finder toolbar buttons. This seems to be for usability's sake, but inconsistency is inconsistency. Same goes for the bright red selected menu item, it's too flashy, too unadorned, and doesn't seem to fit in at all. Something like the menubar selected item, which is awesome, would have been much better.

And, of course, the aqua and metal windows look too similar. I feel like a broken record on this point, it's such a common trait from mockup to mockup.

A few technical notes... various stretching/tiling choices by different parts of the OS could make those oh-so-sexy titlebars and menu look terrible without some serious tweaking.

Still, all things considered, a very impressive mockup.

Scary. Great rendering of the glossies set in the titelbars, but way too scary to use.

Wow, that's a very cool titlebar. However, why'd you stop there, Tom? The rest of the theme seems very boring and unoriginal, if not out of place, with the amazing rocky titlebar and the shiny jewel widgets. The lack of consistency is disappointing; I would've loved to see that rock all over. Ironically, the rocky scroll bar seems out of place with the rest of the engraved black elements. This design could've gone much further; if the rest of the elements matched the theme as I have mentioned, I would've liked it a whole lot more.

I like the progress bars, the tabs, and the buttons.

Very creative theme. Title bar is great! Looks like you can wear it.
I'm not a big fan of replacing the Apple in the Apple menu with other things, but it is done well. Not sure if I would use this theme a lot, but it would be nice to show my PC friends.

Good Work!

The Titlebar is quite nice, though I think it would get annoying fast to have that much detail on the screen with multiple windows open.

The Titlebar rocks! But yes, why did you stop there? Much more could have been done with the other elements. Also, it looks like there might be some trouble when realizing this into a theme, since the titlebar caps might not match up too well with the titlebar fill. Well, anyways, it looks great. Keep up the great work!

I love the titlebar and menubar, very impressive!
However, I think that the button elements should have been give more attention to make them look like rock or something that went better with the titlebars. Good work though!

wow. the titlebar is pretty impressive but unfortunately it looks like the theme is somehow unfinished because the rest doesn't really fit into that look and i think that the titlebar is a little too heavy in relation to the rest. if you could make the look somewhat more consistent this would be a 'stoner' theme, hehe. And a beautiful scary one at that.

ps. i luv the widgets.

I can't tell which tab is selected at a glance, and I'd probably lose the widgets over time. Close, but no cigar.

Wonderful title bar widgets. very nice.

Title bar and menus are awesome... the rest of the theme needs work. I could see myself using this theme on occassion. Very creative, if nothing else.

Posted by eyevaan at March 31, 2004 10:51 AM

Yeah - more darkness!!!

Now, just tie it together [which I am sure there are other versions sitting in hidden layers of the Photoshop file] Make the menus match the title bar and slider [man, that 'rocks'] I can almost see the eyes glowing in the titlebar.

The widgets, usable but too safe.

The rock is dangerous - make the widgets so scary you don't want to fall off the rockface onto the doom pile below...

It kicks ass! Minor issues aside, I hope it gets made!

That's pretty nasty looking (in a good way)

Thanks for the comments everybody. Your critiques are spot-on.

As for the inconsistencies, I consider this to be an unfinished work. I'm not the kind of person to make excuses, but I simply didn't give myself enough time. I found out about the competition a few days before the deadline, but waited until the very last night to start. It's just my own dumb fault. -- or maybe I'm a bad artist. You be the judge. ;-)

As you can see, I only really completed the menu and title bar of the windows. I do plan on completing the design and make a complete theme. I just need to set aside time to do the art up right, and even more to learn how to turn it into a theme. That's not as easy as it seems.

Also, the guidelines didn't include an area for this, but when you have multiple windows open, only the foreground window should look like this. As I envision it, the background windows would have much less contrast, like in the OSX 10.0 days.

Glad to hear that you want to improve the theme, Tom!
I think you got a really good start, and I'm impressed that you got this together in just one night..!

Yeah, I think I emailed you about the contest less than a week before the deadline. :)
