I really dig this theme, it does exactly what you said you were aiming for, and feels nice while doing it. It sets itself apart from other similarly non-dimensional styled themes (FatalE, ChosenOS) and pulls it off quite professionally. I'd use it.

Way too oldskool for my tastes, but well executed nontheless... wouldn't work in OSX though - can't stroke the outer edge of panes. Definitely achieved what they wanted, but I think this old-fashioned style looks a wee bit wonky in OSX alongside all the photorealistic icons and dropshadows, etc. Very clean design - just too clean for me.

It's nice to have a break from photorealism. As Kevin said, I too believe that Noah really nailed what he was trying to do with this design; the combination of 3 different interfaces makes for a mockup that contains the strengths of all three interfaces overall. The best part of this combination is how clean the mockup is; the design isn't confusing at all. I especially like the "rubber" embossments on all of the yellow areas, very awesome. Sadly, I think of the flashier mockups will be more liked than this one.

I love it except for the colors.

I always thoguht BeOS has such a nice, soothing theme.
Great Job! This would make great use of multiple color variations.

Well done, well done. I much prefer "new age" themes, but there's no denying that this had a lot of hard work put into it.

Cool theme! Like William said, might be a bit too old school for OS X, but it looks to me like you really succeeded with the design. Good job!

I love it. I'd definitely use this theme. I really wish there were more flat themes out there. I generally want my os to look as simple and clean as possible. The use of colour really puts this theme ahead of some of the other flat themes because it doesn't suffer from being overly gray. Great job!

Yep, I'd totally use this theme. Nice use of color, "gets of out of the way" while I work... I could see a theme like this being a fixture on my computer for a long time.
Of course, I am a BeOS refugee... my vote may be biased. ;-)

I am really digging this theme... out of all the themes up right now I would definitely use this one. It is so well done - sharp, but a the same time soothing and unobtrusive. The sliders and title bar have a tactile feel, like I could grab them with my hand and move them around. The grays are beautiful and widgets simple and to the point. I agree, color variations would be an excellent addition, but the Yellow brings me back the the Be days. I loved BeOS!

I like it! Simple, but sweet. It's nice-looking, usable, and retro. Kudos.

clean, so clean.
I am a bit disappointed to read Wm. Barts comment, "...wouldn't work in OSX though - can't stroke the outer edge of panes." It means if you do get picked the existing concept would have to be reworked a little.
BUT
that being said, great job, love the 'rubber' sliders and the colors and that ultra crisp "Linux" look overall.
nice.

One of my favourites!

What can I say titlebar widgets that make sense.
Good use of grey and you found a yellow that I don't hate.
The check marks in the check boxes are great, but the radio buttons are a wee bit confusing.

WOW!!! This one definitely got my vote : )
As a designer, doing mostly print work, I like my GUI to be good looking yet subtle enough not to try to grab the attention all the time, distracting me from my actual work. That being said, people should really look at what is being done on the Linux side of thing. Some the KDE theme are creative, original, stylish yet classy enough to be discreet when working...
Good job Noah!!!

If I wanted to go back and use OS 9 and Kaleidoscope, this would be what I'd expect.
Why or why castrate OS X's beautiful potential?
No.

As another fallen Be User I gotta say this theme is awesome. I only wish there was some way to use tabs in OS X. It has always bothered me that OS X got a Windows theme but still has no BeOS. Maybe now...
Very cool check boxes and I like the window sizer thingy in the lower right being yellow, nice touch.

My second favorite theme. Still needs some more finesse though. Some of the edges feel a bit soft. Nice though.

This is an awesome theme... for Mac OS9. It looks too much like the older system. When I switched from OS9 to OSX, I just loved the newer look and disliked the older one. More 'modern' themes suit me better, but this was well done.

Nice theme - reminiscent of Gershwix INHO. I'd like to se the highlight the same as the gold colored elements.

Big points on usability. No real flaws to speak of. A few minor technical impossibilities, but nothing big.
That's about how I feel about this theme overall, though. Nothing big.

I am digging this theme. The design is very consistent, and well done. As people have pointed out, the look is very pleasant; an ideal modernized, yet antique, interface. I wouldn't be surprised if this made it in the top 6, or very close anyhow.

This is a beautiful interface. To counter the point about deep drop shadows, simply set global shadow settings to 'subtle' using WSX (shareware, yes... hopefully some day it will be an option for SS).
However, the biggest design flaw I see is in the titlebar... you will not be able to define a "text region" in the titlebar as we could in OS 9. What this means is that the texture on the yellow bar between the widgets and the titlebar text will actually continue on behind the text and look kind of funky.
Overall, beautiful design and would love to see it come to life (even if it doesn't make top 6...)

NICE theme! Dr. tobot is very ENAMORE
Posted by argus at April 3, 2004 09:23 AM
a melding of system 7 and windows 3.1.
a frankenstein's monster but easy for a theme maker to take on because of it's lack of any complicated shapes. i'm sure the theme makers in this contest hope they get this one...easily made and they wouldn't have to take the flak for unoriginality. "hey it's not my idea, you guys voted this blah thing in"

Very nice theme. Great work =)

I give it two thumbs up. Nice and clean, none of those gel buttons and rounded plastic toolbars that I've grown to loathe. If I were you, Noah, I'd hope that Mac-A-Be doesn't win, that way none of the "experts" will dilute or "fix" your theme. Keep up the good work.

Awesome.
The only problem I foresee is the active and inactive tabs. They do not agree with the active and inactive buttons. The active button is brighter and the inactive button darker -- but it seems the active tab is darker and the inactive tab brighter. Which would confuse users.
Unless I'm looking at this interface wrong. Other than that it's great. Much better than most so called 'modern' interfaces.

I'm very, very surprised by this mockup. I wouldn't have thought that I'd find an idea that's so standard and conservative to be interesting, but this is a really, really well-done mockup.
It's eminently usable. I could see myself using this one day in and day out. The only real problem that I see with it is that the window titlebar texture would underly the window title, but that's not a biggie. I also don't think it would look as nice with the default Lucida Grande, but that's okay.
This mockup doesn't grab the attention right off, but once it's got your attention, it'll hold it. It's also not too original, although it's an extremely clean implementation of an old concept. It is insanely usable, and very aesthetically appealing. There are a few minor issues that would need to be overcome to make it into an actual theme, but nothing huge.

Should've beeen in the top 6. Very usable. clean and pleasant. The judges votes clearly put some unusable themes in the 3, 4, 5, & 6. Positions. Too bad I would've like to have seen this developed.

This is the only theme I'd really use. Cool. After three years of lickability, I found myself really drawn to this Oldskool theme with feelings of nostalgia :-)
I like the fusion of the three gui's, especially the MacOS influence... I must be getting old ;-)
Judging from the bigger screenshot, it seems to work well with typical OS X icons. You'd think it wouldn't, but the two icons depicted blended in nicely.
Yep, for this theme, I'd consider messing with my GUI :-)

I have to admit to utter shock at the support this theme is getting...I just DON'T get this one.
It's KS all over again - no thanks.

Great theme! Themes like AquaPro and SS Studio Pro in my mind get out of your way too much. This is just right.
