Pencil Neck

Pencil NeckAuthor: Joshua Dickens
Final Score: 57%
Description: Giving a hand-made feel to OSX, as if it were sketched and torn from rag paper. Decidedly low-tech.

I almost disqualified this one after taking a glance at it, for ripping off our guidelines. Boy was I wrong. Take a quick second look, and suddenly, all is clear. This is completely original, and unique. Like DrawingBoardX, Pencil Neck is a capture of a work in progress. I could definitely use this entry; I always loved DBX, but was interested in one without the strong color. One suggestion: perhaps the frayed paper edges in brushed metal is too much. With the rest of the theme, I get more of an impression of elements cut out from a sketch, rather than ripped out.

I wasactually ready to disregard this this theme as "no need, we have DXB". But, after looking at the wonderful canvas texture for texture windows and imagining using it, I think its quite cool. Very similar to Good Gray but in a more interesting, unploished way. Pretty cool.

This theme has a drawing board feel to it, pretty cool! I think you could have done something different with the titlebar buttons and unfortunately it's not possible to have metal windows with edges like that, not yet at least. I think you could have made your own buttons shapes and have their edges be more torn.
An above average theme I think.

The torn-paper metal window is very well done indeed... the overall tone seems a but more watercolor than pencil to me though. Don't understand the heavy-handed stroke on the aqua window at all.

Looks like a combination of Kaleidoscope's NotePaper and Drawing Board which are really cool! The strokes around the Main Window isn't a great idea and elements should have more noise and gritty feeling to them. Other than that I'm really impressed with the design.

Wow, looks like everyone has been reading my mind before writing their comments. I really, really like this idea, and it's pulled off very well. Unfortunately a lot of the little details on the edges of elements like buttons and progress bars aren't possible, same goes for the metal window edge (or that aqua window stroke, now that I think about it), but if I just pretend they are then I'm very impressed.

Positive points for originality, negative for stretching Aqua limitations by a bit too much.

I was looking to doing something like this myself, I love the sketchy look of DBX but wanted something a bit brighter. Good work!

Wow, excellent feedback everyone.

The thing that appealed to me about this contest was that it was expressly aimed at "newbies" like me -- I hope that my ignorance of Aqua's limitations doesn't detract from the idea behind the theme--something different than the multitude of slick themes out there (DBX notwithstanding -- I've never seen/heard of it till now!)

That said, I'm definitely inspired to find out what 's doable and what isn't to make this theme a reality...

I actually love this theme. Not as much as Paper & Plastic, but still very cool. It seems creative, and yet usable.

One of my absolute favorites. The subtlety of it is incredible. The metal windows shouldn't be torn, or at least not in that cartoonish hay that are now. But even with that 5 stars.

It looks like good grey.

Very cool, I've been looking for something like this. The torn metal window is a sweet idea!

This is an interesting mockup. The metal window bevels are pretty cool. Unfortunately, I don't think the aqua window borders can currently be realized.

The only big problem I have with this theme is that it's somewhat bland. These tend to be very popular, but I don't personally find them to be aesthetically appealing.

I don't think that this mockup would grab people's attention very quickly, although it's interesting once you begin to look at it. It's somewhat original in that the textured edges are new and groovy. I think it's not very usable day to day since the contrast is so low, but I also think that about many themes that people do find to be very usable. I don't find it to be very aesthetically appealing, and, unfortunately, it's not completely realizable due to the aqua window borders.

Nice theme. More contrast please, though.
