MacThemes.net Theme Mockup Contest
In the short two months that MacThemes.net has been open, the community has helped us become the number one destination for Mac theme news, reviews, and interviews. Now, we would like to give back to the community, and what better way is there to do this than to directly promote the creation of great themes? We decided that there is no better way, and we are happy to announce our first MacThemes Theme Mockup Contest.
What is a Theme Mockup Contest? Early on in our plans, we decided to cut the excellent but intimidating ThemePark out of the equation to open up the playing field for great artists who have always been afraid of starting a theme. This means two things: First, creating mockups will hopefully attract more entries to the contest. Second, we expect artists who have never attempted a theme to enter the contest. Sounds great, but why would anyone enter?
Grand Prize
- $125
- GUI software kit (full list)
- Mockup realized into a theme by Max Rudberg
- A MacThemes.net Insider Edition
- An Unsanity t-shirt
2nd Place
- $50
- GUI software kit (full list)
- Mockup realized into a theme by Harlan Lewis
- An Unsanity t-shirt
3rd Place
- GUI software kit (full list)
- Mockup realized into a theme by Joe Kohlmann
- An Unsanity t-shirt
4th-6th Place
- A theme development software kit (full list)
The top six entries will receive prizes, including the possibility of working with top themers and a MacThemes.net Insider. On March 30th, all mockups will be posted on this page, with author information, description, and a place for your user votes. User voting will represent 50% of a mockup's score, and the other 50% will be given by a 10 person panel of our staff, themers, and GUI software developers. Each mockup will have a final score out of 100%, and the winners will be determined by this method. Winners will be announced at the end of the 5 day voting period, and scores will be posted for all entries.
Basic Rules
- 1 entry per person.
- Entry must be original.
- Entries must contain all elements represented in our Mockup guidelines.
- We reserve the right to disqualify mockups that do not conform to Aqua's limitations.
- Artists of the three winning mockups are obliged to complete their mockups with a themer.
- Entries are due by 11:59 PM Eastern Time, March 29th.
- Full rules are included in the entry download package.
Many thanks to Max Rudberg, Harlan Lewis, and Joe Kohlmann for devoting their time to make this contest work, and to Unsanity, Carpe Stellarem, Chickenbyte, Geekspiff Software, The IconFactory, Panic, MacRabbit, and Arlo Rose and Perry Clarke for contributing cash and software licenses for the prizes.

A note for PC users: There is nothing barring you from entering this contest, as long as you are prepared to work with a Mac themer on a Mac theme should you win. And remember that the $200 of Mac software won't be of much use ;)

I'm not sure if the photoshop files included in the download link will work for all version of Photoshop so if it doesn't work for you, please let me know ASAP by email me at adambetts@mac.com . I'll send you a test version to see if it will work. Thanks.

great idea, I am running os9. And have some ideas, but my mac is to slow to run in X so I have never bothered with theming, have been meaning too.
Posted by Ian Black at March 1, 2004 08:40 AM
Very interesting, being a pc user as myself been working on a few OS X design mockups in the past that has never seen the light of day.
Certainly would be cool to see it on OS X platform for real.
Though not sure about time, as the GUI Olympics has just started. Though it is very tempting to squeeze this in ;)
It definately sounds like fun!

(I think it is a nifty looking idea.)

Don't be silly :) I agree though, the guidelines psd is ridiculously good for it's purpose.

Can two people collaborate on one mockup?
Posted by wibs at March 2, 2004 04:41 AM
what about four people? I have some friends who'd like some of that software as well ;)
Posted by Phillip Ryu at March 2, 2004 06:45 AM
Hmm, I suppose so, but the prize would be sent to only one person. (And it'd be up to you guys to split it up.)
Posted by NetworkShadow at March 2, 2004 10:46 AM
I've got one mockup I think I'll be calling "New Car Smell" I think it looks like the inside of a new car. Not sure if I'll enter it though,

This is all great and stuff, but where is the metal window mockup guide?! It's been sayin' "An updated package will be available for download on the site later today." for two days now...
Posted by Phillip Ryu at March 3, 2004 06:23 AM
I want to say the package should be updated today but I couldn't say that with 100% certainty. If you want to get working on it, the "brushed metal guidelines" will be a shot of the Finder. Updated package will be posted asap for people like you. Sorry for the delay!

Boy, not only am I competing against fellow Mac users but also PC users. This competition will be tough...I say bring it on.
Posted by [ idle. ] at March 5, 2004 07:30 PM
yeah, i'll give this a try too. I've never done a theme before but there have been ideas for one for quite some time now. Ok, back to my sketchbook.

Send the package into contests@macthemes.net :)

I want to enter, but the timing of this contest intersects Pixelpalooza at the Iconfactory! Do I have time for both? Which should I spend more time on, considering both contests has EXCELLENT graphic artists entering?
Posted by Phillip Ryu at March 10, 2004 06:15 AM
This one. ;)
Posted by Adam Betts at March 11, 2004 12:43 AM
Ernest, I don't think this contest intersects Pixelpalooza at all. They're two totally different contests.
Posted by wibs at March 11, 2004 08:38 AM
his problem is the timing... and the devoting of his time :).
Posted by Ernest Liu at March 11, 2004 01:56 PM
Yes yes... well, I've already got part of my pixelpalooza entry finished. I've got barely any of the theme done. Hopefully I'll be able to finish both, but I have this feeling I gotta finish the pixelpalooza first =)
Posted by Phillip Ryu at March 11, 2004 03:29 PM
Pixelpalooza's deadline is a few days later then us, but you should be fine. If you have a good idea, a mockup might take you a few days work :) Do you have spring break coming up?
Posted by Ernest Liu at March 11, 2004 09:19 PM
I've already started on a mockup before the site started, and ran into some problems trying to import it into a theme. But now that Max can do it if I win, I won't have that problem. But I still gotta finish my pixelpalooza stuff first. Yeah, spring break is coming up, but not too soon.
Posted by Ernest Liu at March 18, 2004 01:45 AM
I've decided to give this contest a try after talking with Adam Betts =D
Posted by Sean at March 20, 2004 01:53 PM
Any chance of previewing the entries before the final selections are made? I'd like to see what I'm up against. ;)
Posted by wibs at March 21, 2004 04:12 AM
Sean,
All of the mockups will be posted where anyone can vote on them before any winners are picked (because of course the votes tally into that, heh). Before March 30th though you can't look at other contestant's mockups unless they choose to show them themselves.
Posted by gautch at March 29, 2004 10:46 AM
awwhh.. march 30th seems sooo far away.... :( .. Garsh that tomarow... weeeee
